Book OnlineWhat Is Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy uses extremely cold temperatures to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue. At Marina OB/GYN, it is most commonly used to remove genital warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and to destroy precancerous cells on the cervix, which are often discovered after an abnormal Pap smear and a follow-up colposcopy. Removing these cells early reduces the risk of cervical cancer and helps prevent infections from worsening.
We understand that sexually transmitted infections are a sensitive topic. Our team provides care in a private, compassionate, and judgment-free setting, and we encourage you to discuss your concerns openly so we can help you understand your diagnosis and treatment options.

Am I a Candidate for Cryotherapy?
Your provider reviews your symptoms and medical history, checks your vital signs, and performs a pelvic exam. A Pap test may be done to screen for cervical cancer. Cryotherapy is a good option for many women with genital warts or mild to moderate cervical cell changes.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Your provider applies a cold probe or freezing agent to the abnormal tissue. Treatment is fast, and most women feel only mild cramping, numbness, or a slight burning sensation as the tissue thaws. Ask your provider whether to take an over-the-counter pain reliever beforehand.
Recovery and Follow-Up
You can return to most normal activities right away. Treated warts shrivel and fall off as the area heals, typically over 7 to 14 days. After cervical cryotherapy, a watery discharge for a few weeks is normal. Your provider may ask you to avoid intercourse until healing is complete and will schedule a follow-up Pap test, usually about six months later, to confirm all abnormal cells were removed.
