Kybella® Q & A

by Dr. Jamie Lipeles

What Is Kybella®?

Kybella is the first and only injectable treatment approved by the FDA to destroy fat cells under the chin. In doing so, Kybella effectively eliminates the appearance of the dreaded “double chin.” Kybella eradicates “double chin” fat while leaving other cells healthy and intact. This injectable is a major breakthrough in cosmetic facial enhancements. Previously, the only option for dealing with the common double-chin dilemma was surgery or liposuction, both far more risky and painful.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella, made of a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid (a naturally occurring molecule in the body) is injected into the targeted area to destroy fat cells. Over time these dead cells are naturally flushed out of the body.

What does the process entail?

This in-office procedure is quick and simple. The injections are made into the submental area. Patients may receive up to 50 injections in a single treatment, with up to six single treatments administered at least a month apart. Some patients achieve their desired results after just one or two treatments. For most 4-6 treatments provide optimum results. The process itself takes only about 15 to 20 minutes. There may be some slight pain. Afterwards, there’s likely to be some temporary swelling, bruising, or numbness in the treated area. But downtime and pain are minimal.

Are results permanent?

Yes. Once fat cells are killed they will never reproduce. That means once a patient reaches her desired appearance, no additional treatments are ever needed. Should a patient gain weight after undergoing Kybella treatment, fat will not accumulate under the chin. The results of Kybella are striking. The chin is important to the overall silhouette of the face, which is likely why even though Kybella has only been on the market since the spring of 2015, it is already immensely popular and receiving rave reviews from patients.
